In a sleepy Oxford town, someone’s picking off victims and leaving a series of mathematical symbols as their trademark. Can Yank maths grad Martin (Wood) and olde English logician Arthur Seldom (Hurt) solve the crimes and unmask a centuries-old cover-up by the Catholic Church to – sorry, wrong film.

In fairness to The Oxford Murders, based on Argentine Guillermo Martinez’s 2003 novel, there’s a lot more between the ears than in anything Dan Brown has authored. In effect, what we have here is a battle of academic ideals, between mathematician Martin, who believes that every problem has a solution, and Seldom, who answers the eternal question ‘can we know the truth?’ with a (Wittgenstein-inspired) probably not.

First victim is Martin’s ailing landlady (Massey), herself a wartime Enigma code veteran and friend of Seldom. The pair discover her body together, the former having been alerted with a note signed “the first of the series” and an inscribed circle. Aside from our detecting duo, other suspects include the landlady’s frustrated cellist daughter Beth (Julie Cox), Podorov (Gorman) a rival Russian student for Seldom’s attention and even a sexy nurse, Lorna (Watling), who quickly comes on to Martin, who is seemingly irresistible for a maths nerd.
