Amanda’s deathbed request to her son, John, was for him to destroy all the lab notes etc. from her last experiment. She also blurts out he had a brother. At the funeral John meets Melissa, who claims to be his mothers biggest fan. Together with some of John’s friends they go to Amanda’s house, but none are prepared for what they find there.
There were a variety of creatures in the film as well, big small, slimy, tentacled, all rendered in classic pre cgi fashion. I didn’t really understand why the hybrid creatures were created in the first place but then I guess thats just what mad scientists do. I got no complaints about the lack of plot logic, or the mostly unappealing characters, since the acting was fair enough to carry the film when the monsters weren’t around. This was mainly during the first twenty minutes more or less, but the second half had a good deal of exciting action, making up for the more leisurely opening. The big problem was the lack of gore. There were a couple of nifty scenes, but the body count was annoyingly low, and there just wasn’t enough on screen grisliness, which really lessened the impact. It was a shame cause if there was more gore this would be a really sweet film. There were lots of points of interest, including Rod Steiger hamming it up, a bizarre fate for Amanda Pays, and a kinda neat opening, much different to how these films usually start. It gave me an easy 85 minutes of fun, but it just didn’t hit hard enough and placing the gore in the middle rather than the end sorta spoiled the pacing.
