In this film, Zatoichi crosses the line from being a master swordsman to being a Zen Master. Zatoichi finds a dying man on the road. The man asks Zatoichi to save his daughter and to take her to Edo. The young woman is a princess of a very wealthy family, and she is worth a lot of money to the Yakuza Gangs who can sell her to the family for a large ransom of gold coins.
So Zatoichi is thrust into a battle against several Yakuza gangs who want to kidnap the princess. Meanwhile, an unethical Yakuza gang lord is claiming that Zatoichi has been paid to fight for his Yakuza gang against a rival gang over gambling territory. This brings a price on Zatoichi’s head from the rival gang’s leader. Various samurai from various gangs are attacking Zatoichi for one reason or another.
Into the fray enter a conniving samurai and his wife, who talk the princess into fearing that Zatoichi is a thieving criminal, so she runs away from Zatoichi. The conniving couple capture the princess and they try to sell her to a Yakuza gang but they are forced to turn the princess over. The princess goes from the frying pan into the fire and Zatoichi has to keep fighting his way through dozens of samurai in order to save her.
In the middle of all that, the Yakuza gang lords start a war, and Zatoichi is in the middle. Both gangs want him to fight for them, and both gangs want to kill him after the war is over. Every where Zatoichi turns, he is betrayed by people who consider him a lowly blind masseur who is beneath their social caste. Yet Zatoichi is probably the only one who always acts with conscience, compassion, and honor.
