Hapless British spy Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) is assigned to Berlin where he will arrange and oversee the defection of Colonel Stok, head of intelligence in Russia’s Berlin section, responsible for preventing escapes over the Berlin Wall. His contact in Berlin, Johnny Vulkan, is convinced of Stok’s sincerity, but Palmer is incredulous, and has Vulkan arrange a meeting. In the meantime, Palmer is picked up by a beautiful young woman, Samantha (Eva Renzi), who invites him to a party, but takes him her place for drinks, dinner, and presumably more as Palmer is next seen leaving Sam’s place the next morning. Not taken in by Samantha’s charms, Palmer hires a burglar to search her apartment to figure out who she really is, but the only odd thing that is discovered is her little black book, showing names of men next to million-dollar figures. Returning to his hotel room, Palmer finds that it too has been ransacked, presumably by Samantha…..
