Lu Hsiao Feng (Liu Yung) meets with Hua Man-liu (Sun Chien) and others to discover why their close friend, swordsman Yeh Ku-cheng (Pai Piao), has challenged Hsi Men Chui-hsueh (Yueh Hua) to a duel despite having allegedly been fatally wounded while killing Tang Tien-yi.
Tang’s brother Tuen-yung (Kuan Feng) seeks revenge and is killed by Yeh. Then Yeh is also accused of killing his classmate Chang Jen-ying, but he denies it.
Lu finds that Yeh really is wounded, but Yeh refuses to reveal the reason for the duel. Yeh’s wife Leng Ching-chiu (Ching Li) asks Lu to get an antidote for her husband from Hsi Men, but when Lu returns, he is attacked by men of the Tien Shan clan.
Lu and Hsi Men want to find out if Chang Jen-ying really was killed by Yeh and rush to intercept the body which Yen has taken away for cremation. They discover that Chang’s wound does not bear Yeh’s mark, yet when one of three wax models found in Chang’s sleeve resembles Yeh Ku-cheng, Yen again suspects him and vows vengeance.
Yen receives a note to meet Yeh at Tai Lake. Lu and Hsi Men rush there too, only to find Yen already dead.
Lu and Hua cannot figure out the wounded Yeh’s repeated killings. Lu heals Yeh’s wound with the antidote, but Yeh will still not reveal the reason for his duel.
Now Lu receives a note to meet Yeh at Tai Lake, where he discovers that he is an impostor. But when Lu tells the real Yeh of this, Yeh incapacitates him and then explains that he must fight the duel in return for a favor done to his wife. Lu is later confined by Chief Wang, who tells him that the duel is merely a diversion to cover an usurpation plot in which Yeh has unwittingly been made to assist.
On the day of the duel, Lu is revived in time to help prevent Yeh from murdering the sovereign, and to reveal the truth. Deeply ashamed, Yeh makes atonement in a death duel with Hsi Men.
