At first glance, this film may seem as just a concert. Yet, as Robbie Robertson said, it became a celebration. This film is nothing less than that. One of the reasons why this film is the beautiful film that it is is because of its subject, The Band, and what its subject represents, which is pure musical artistry. The Band’s members, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel, are all exceptional in their respective instruments and roles in the band. Throughout their history, they played back-up to many amazing artists in modern music times, including Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Neil Young. When maturation hit, they became impeccable artists in their own right, creating such quality songs as “The Night they drove old Dixie Down” and “The Weight”. In fact, the quality of their songs put them up on the level of the artists they once were happy enough just to back-up. Their final concert took place on November 25, 1976. A band with The Band’s high artistry would be forgiven if they chose to have their final concert a 4 hour long self-congratulatory sob-fest. The Band, however, thought otherwise and decided to invite all their former friends to once again back up. It’s a conclusion that celebrates not as much The Band but just beautiful music itself. Martin Scorsese documented this concert with the utmost respect for its subject and captured the beauty of creating pure music. This film should be played loud, and this film should be watched by all music lovers.
