This film sounded right up my alley – an experimental and absurd punk rock sci-fi film from Japan. It was a major influence on both Takashi Miike and Shinya Tsukamoto, both of whom are filmmakers I admire greatly. The film’s style itself is very innovative, and for something that was made on no budget, its a rather remarkable achievement. I’m not surprised this inspired potential filmmakers to make their own independent productions. Also, the soundtrack is entertaining, and 80s Japanese punk is possibly the most nihilistic lyrically.
Unfortunately, attempting to sit through this thing is a whole different deal. While its innovative, its not particularly well made. The frenetic editing style induces headaches more than tension. Also, there’s really no characters or storyline to speak of, which makes this very hard going for two hours. If this was only an hour long (like “Tetsuo”), it could’ve been much more effective. At nearly twice that length though, it becomes very tiresome quickly. In the end, this is only recommended to die hard fans of new wave Japanese cinema. For the rest of us, there’s much better films by director Sogo Ishii out there.
