Vengeance Is Mine (1979)

sitting in the backseat of a car with two poker-faced police officers, and ruefully uttering the words “It’s gonna be damn cold in the clink.” There is a small discussion with one of the officers preceding this, about how unfair it is that he’ll be hanged soon, while the officer, already 10-15 years older, will stay alive, and continue to get laid, among other things.
This seemingly matter-of-fact discussion immediately sets the tone of the movie, which can superficially be called a serial killer movie, and also a character study of a criminal. At some level, it is both, the latter certainly more than the former, but it is so unique, and it’s protagonist, so frighteningly real, even normal, that it creates a niche of it’s own, substantially different from the two genres it shares similarities with. Iwao Enokizu (Ken Ogata), guilty of five murders, certainly looks like he’s accepted the fate that awaits him, even regarding it as just, and displays a disquieting calm at most times, but his deep regret, that it’s somehow unfair that he has to die, stays with you, suggesting a character trait, and a way of looking at the bewildering and scary events that will soon unfold. It suggests a man who thinks he has been wronged all his life, although never entirely sure how, and by whom (neither are we), and so he must get the vengeance, in the movie’s title. How that equates to the lives of five completely innocent people remains a baffling mystery, possibly even to him.
