Spike (2008)

People love fairy tales… the problem is it’s hard as fuck to create a new one. Old fairy tales are simple, often grim, pieces of work with very few details. Translating this format to film would seem to be an easy endeavor, but it’s not. No doubt the filmmakers behind Spike, which is dubbed as a “gothic fairytale” discovered this during their production. Rather than being a fantastic new entry into the fairy tale world, Spike is a pretentious pile of tropes, references to the Beauty and the Beast archetype, and low-budget good intentions.
The main problem with Spike is that it’s such a simple tale. A group of travelers, of whom we know nothing about, get stranded in the woods. They are attacked by a spiky humanoid creature. What could have been a good creature feature takes a turn for the worse when its discovered that the spiky creature loves one of the passengers and has a passion for classic literature… often referencing such beauty and the beast pieces as The Tempest, Beauty and the Beast, etc. What follows is a slow flick, where a monster tries and convinces a beauty that life in the woods eating bugs and never being allowed to enjoy sex is a good idea.
